Blog # 6: Complete Staged Writing Assignment and Rubric

This is your final Blog for WID Online.  Please read Bean, Chapter 14 "Using Rubrics to Develop and Apply Grading Criteria" and Chapter 9, "Helping Students Read Difficult Texts."

For this blog you will need to post a staged essay for your course.  e would like you to design and share the stages of this assignment on the blog.  Students may do one longer staged essay or two (or more) shorter pieces that are combined with a reflection.

As you are creating the essay(s) topic(s) you should develop a basic rubric for it using Bean's models or creating your own. (Bean's generic rubric appears on page 271, but you should create one that fits your staged essay well.)

Writing Fellows and I will help you with this process and are available for blog or email conversations about all parts of your WID portfolio.  With the completion of this blog, and the addition of samples of student work (which I will make a space for in Blog # 7) your portfolio should be complete.

A document entitled "WID Staged Writing Assignment Guidelines" may be found under course documents.

Please feel free to reach out to us on the blog and if anyone wants to meet to discuss this assignment, please contact me through the blog or at vanph@lagcc.cuny.edu. and I or one of the Writing Fellows will meet with you.

  1. The following assignment is what I had my students complete as a staged writing assignment:

General guidelines for papers (Technological Literacy): (Be Green: No cover pages or report covers).
Professional manuscripts must be formatted to the guidelines specified by the publisher. Students are expected to learn how to format documents properly as part of their professional development.
    • Header: Name, SCN195, date the paper is submitted in a single line, right justified (Campo, SCN195, 3/8/12)
    • Footer: Page numbers on bottom right
    • Margins: 1-inch margins on top, bottom, and both sides (MS Word default is 1.25 so you must change it!)
    • Paragraphs: Half inch indent for the first line of paragraph, no extra spaces between paragraphs (MS Word default adds an extra 10pt space, again change it!)
    • Spacing: Double Spaced
    • Appropriate Fonts: The Microsoft default, Calibri 11pt, or Arial 11pt or Times New Roman at 12pt
    • Penalties: Up to 10 points each may be deducted for not adhering to formatting instructions and lateness!
    • Writing Quality (spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.): worth 10 points of each paper grade.
Paper 1: Community Health Advocacy (Critical Literacy + Quantitative Literacy), 15% of final grade
The purpose of this assignment is to gain insight into health issues in your neighborhood. For this assignment you will be using the NYC Department of Health’s Community Health Profiles. A direct link will be provided on Blackboard (You enter your zip code and download the Community Health Profile for your neighborhood). Keep in mind that this paper is PERSUASIVE in the sense that you are attempting to convince the Commissioner of the Department of Health that certain issues in your community need to be addressed. A sample paper will be posted on Blackboard as a model to follow (but NOT to copy from!).
Stage I: Homework-Bring Community Health Profile your neighborhood to class
    • Professor will review how to read the tables, charts and figures in the profiles.
    • Each student will identify and pick ONE of the following goals (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) in which their community is doing worse compared to their borough and NYC overall.
    • Class will brainstorm ideas for primary, secondary and tertiary interventions for to improve each goal
Stage II: Rough Draft-Letter to the Commissioner of Health, 2.5-3 pages, with community profile attached
Dear Dr. Thomas A. Farley, Commissioner, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
 In the opening paragraph introduce yourself, your major, and briefly describe this assignment. (5 points)
 In the next paragraph, name your community, give the population and briefly describe the demographics in percentages, specifically: race/ethnicity, age, education, poverty, foreign born. (20 points)
 Identify which goal your community is doing poorly in compared to your borough and the city overall; summarize the information from the tables and figures in one paragraph. (20 points)
 In the next three separate paragraphs, suggest a primary, secondary and tertiary intervention (chapter 2) that the community could implement to meet Take Care NYC targets. (15 points each, 45 total).
➢ Suggestions must be specific, practical, and involve individuals and organizations in the community.
 End with closing and your name (no signature necessary!)
Stage III: Final Revision of the Letter to the Commissioner of Health
    • Final version should be reformatted as a single spaced block style professional letter.
    • Explain on a personal level about the issues in your community. Perhaps you have a family member who is suffering from the issues in your community; use this to persuade the Commissioner and help make a difference.
    • Attach Stage II graded draft version to the back of the paper
Stage IV: Deposit paper into ePorfolio Critical Literacy area

    Feedback is WELCOME!!!!!

  2. Hi James--sorry to give such a delayed response--end of semester blues! This assignment looks really detailed and interesting. I like that you have a sample paper on BB. I do that as well and try to take some time to review sample in class asking questions about what makes it strong. Moving from investigation of a health issue to letter to commissioner (revised) seems very purposeful and gives a professional voice to your students! I also like the personal response that may make the letter more powerful. I'll be posting a final blog space for you to upload a sample student essay and journal entry on your experience with the staged essay. Once that is done, you will have completed your WID portfolio and I will send you a certificate. Thank you so much for doing this work so efficiently and well!

  4. The following assignment is what my students completed as a staged writing assignment for SCL 102 Introduction To Practical Nursing.

General guidelines for Task-Specific Rubric as outlined in Bean (pg. 273).

    Activity Objectives:
--Reinforce the need for practical nurses to remain politically aware of issues affecting nursing, health care and their community.
--Provide the opportunity to express student's point of view about a community, local, state, national or international health, environment, or human rights issue.

    Staged assignment for students
--Select a community, local, state, national or international issue of interest, and one that focuses on a health, environment, or human rights issue. Check with the instructor for appropriateness of your choice.
--Write a one page letter to the appropriate legislator, organization or influential individual(s) who can address the issue.
--Submit two copies of the letter, along with an addressed and stamped envelope.

Letter Writing Tips(Also see writing handouts and examples on BlackBoard)
--Know whom to contact. If the matter is a Community or Local matter, contact the appropriate local official or individual. If the matter is a State matter, contact appropriate state official. If matter is National in scope, contact the appropriate US senator, member of the House of Representatives or where relevant the President of the US.
--If you are writing about a passage of a law, know the bill number if one has been assigned. To obtain a copy of a Bill check the websites of/or write:
    US Senate Bills House Bill
Senate Documents Office Doorkeeper of the House
Washington, DC 20510 US Capitol, Washington, DC 20510
Enclose a mailing label for faster service. To request copies of a State Bill contact the legislator who sponsored the bill, or contact your own local legislator.
--Plan what you want to communicate in advance.
--When writing letter, identify yourself as a nursing student. Outline concern about the issue. State the position you would like the official or person to take. If possible, underscore your point with examples.
